Awarded the title of Innovator in this year’s Business Desk West Midlands Business Masters 2013 Winners, is Koolmill, a Solihull-based technology company.
Alec Anderson, Managing Director, Koolmill Systems Limited, described the Koolmill project, set up with no government or EU funding, and points made included:
- it has developed a truly innovative milling process, a radical superefficient displacement technology that will make a positive impact on the lives of many living in food and fuel poverty;
- it delivers power savings of up to 80%, out-performing all traditional milling systems;
- it produces the same food output with 20% less paddy input
- as its use increases, the ultra-low power will move rice milling to a more sustainable level, helping governments to meet the carbon reduction targets.
Koolmill technology is developed and owned in the West Midlands – a genuine high growth manufactured-for-export product. It has received awards in China and is licensed and verified by the Chinese Government who recognise the many competitive benefits that Koolmill technology delivers and are actively supporting its introduction to the Chinese market.
Their Chinese joint venture (JV) recently moved to a 9,000m2 unit and is budgeted to deliver £400,000 in royalties this year (200 machines) rising to 1,500 machines by 2016. A Chinese Venture Capitalist is currently undertaking the due diligence and the JV received a £100,000 grant from the Chinese government. MD Alec Anderson is now recognised as a Foreign Expert and is part of the Recruitment Program of Global Experts by the Chinese Government.
By directly servicing premium markets outside the EU from the UK, improved margins can deliver long term growth and manufacturing employment in the West Midlands with the potential to surpass royalty income from China. Koolmill has identified a manufacturing partner in the West Midlands and is in discussions to establish a high value manufacturing facility. 100 machines annually (£3 million) is realistic and achievable within 3 years.
