Central Wheel Components has a wide customer base in this country, including this renowned British museum where the wheels of the prized exhibits are restored or replaced. Components are also exported to several destinations, including Los Angeles. CWC is now Europe’s largest supplier of motorcycle wheel components to road, trials and classic bikes.
In 2010 CWC’s tyre division, Wheel House Tyres, moved to a business unit in Water Orton.
CWC offers a comprehensive in-house wheel building and restoring service:
- hubs are wire brushed and painted,
- new sets of motocross spokes fitted
- anodised rims replaced
- hubs and rims vapour blasted, polished, blasted and powder coated.
Wheels are generally built on to customer’s own rims, but Supermoto complete wheel packages including hubs, can be supplied.
Spokes can be made to the customer’s specification. Coils of wire are fed into the spoke machine (opposite), which straightens the wire, cuts it, forms the head and rolls the thread as it ejects the spoke from the machine. Large vibrating metal bowls containing polishing compound and ceramic pellets clean the spokes and the final polish is applied by maize in similar vibrating bowls.

In 2008, after fifteen years of US ownership, Stuart Garner, a British businessman, bought the rights to Norton and relaunched it at Donington Park where it is developing a new range of Norton motorcycles, including a racing machine styled after the Norton Commando.
He asked CWC’s managing director Warren Harding about his worst experience; the answer, “Having to make 12 members of staff redundant at very short notice when Triumph Motorcycles relocated their “Cruiser” motorcycle factory to Thailand”. His best? “Re-employing 4 of the 12 people I had to let go in 2008.”
Garner’s verdict: Central Wheel Components Ltd has a professional wheel building team trained to the highest standard, many of whom have been with the company for over 20 years. They are the UK’s most accomplished wheel builders.
